Tobias Schneider
Research Fellow
Tobias Schneider is a research fellow at the Global Public Policy Institute (GPPi) in Berlin. His research interests include insurgency and counterinsurgency in the contemporary Middle East, and related issues of state weakness, security sector development, and the political economy of conflict.
Prior to joining GPPi, Tobias worked as a Middle East analyst at IHS Markit in London, as a consultant on Syria and Yemen for the World Bank, and as a research assistant at the Center for European Policy Analysis in Washington, DC.
Tobias has briefed high-level policy- and decision-makers and advised government, non-profit, and private sector clients on strategic policy challenges, especially in relation to the ongoing war in Syria. He is a regular contributor at the Middle East Institute and serves as an expert for the Atlantic Council’s “Rebuilding Syria” initiative. His analysis and commentary have been featured by or appeared in CNN, the BBC, the Washington Post, Der Spiegel, and Al-Hayat, among others.
Tobias holds a bachelor’s degree in Middle East studies from Sciences Po in Paris and spent a fellowship year at the Université Saint-Joseph in Beirut. He received his master’s degree in strategic studies and international economics as the annual Muller-McGovern Fellow at the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies in Bologna and Washington, DC.
