By its very nature, energy is both an economic and a security issue. The discovery and development of new energy sources have always been important redistributive events in national and global history. The current energy transition from hydrocarbons to renewable energies is therefore not simply a technical matter – it has far-reaching political implications, ranging from the redistribution of wealth to the question of international war and peace.

Together with emminent scholars and a community of policymakers, academics, and journalists, we want to explore the ideas we hold about energy and its role in current domestic and foreign policy, what is at stake, who wins and who loses, where history can serve as a point of reference and where we find ourselves in uncharted territory.

We are pleased to invite you to the second event of our Ideas of… Energy” series:

Episode 2: Energy and Justice

with Andreas Goldthau, political scientist and Professor of Public Policy at the Willy Brandt School of the University of Erfurt.

Together, we will explore the global distribution issues that are connected to the energy transition. The focus will be on the clean transition”: who benefits from it and who bears the burden? Goldthau will shed light on the aspects of justice that are increasingly shaping global energy policy and discuss how fair transitions can be designed.

  • When: Thursday, December 5, 2024, from 19:30 to 21:00 CET (followed by a reception)
  • Where: Dezernat Zukunft, Chausseestraße 111, 10115 Berlin
