By its very nature, energy is both an economic and a security issue. The discovery and development of new energy sources have always been important redistributive events in national and global history. The current energy transition from hydrocarbons to renewable energies is therefore not simply a technical matter – it has far-reaching political implications, ranging from the redistribution of wealth to the question of international war and peace.

Together with emminent scholars and a community of policymakers, academics, and journalists, we want to explore the ideas we hold about energy and its role in current domestic and foreign policy, what is at stake, who wins and who loses, where history can serve as a point of reference and where we find ourselves in uncharted territory.

We are pleased to invite you to the third event of our Ideas of… Energy” series:

Episode 3: Energy and War & Peace

with Helen Thompson, Professor of Political Economy at the University of Cambridge, author of Disorder: Hard Times in the 21st Century (Oxford University Press, 2022), and co-host of the UnHerd podcast These Times.

Together with Helen, we will examine the connections between energy and geopolitics in a turbulent world. How has energy shaped the international order? What do the current conflicts with Russia and in the Middle East mean for Germany’s energy sovereignty and security? What geopolitical dynamics arise in the process of decarbonization?

  • When: Thursday, January 16, 2025, from 19:00 CET (talk and discussion, followed by a reception)
  • Where: GPPi, Reinhardtstr. 7, 10117 Berlin
