Maximilian Gahntz
Non-Resident Fellow
Maximilian Gahntz is a non-resident fellow with the Global Public Policy Institute (GPPi). He is currently a senior advisor for the Economic Democracy Project, a new philanthropic initiative working to reclaim democratic control over vital tech infrastructures, and a senior fellow at Mozilla, the nonprofit foundation behind the Firefox web browser and other products. His work focuses on tech and AI policy in Europe and beyond, exploring the intersections with geopolitics, competition and industrial policy.
Previously, Max spent five years building up and leading Mozilla’s global work on AI policy. While at Mozilla, he also led various projects on platform and data governance. Before, he was a fellow of the Mercator Fellowship on International Affairs, working at the European Commission’s DG CONNECT on the proposal for the EU AI Act. He is also a member of the European Commission’s Frontier AI Expert Forum and co-coordinates the AI working group of D64 – Center for Digital Progress.
Max holds master’s degrees in public administration and policy from Columbia University in New York and Sciences Po Paris. He holds a bachelor’s degree in politics and public administration from the University of Konstanz and spent a year abroad at Rutgers University in the US during his undergraduate studies.
