Jan Ortgies

Jan Ortgies is the Legal Adviser to His Excellency Judge Bruno Simma at the Iran-United States Claims Tribunal. Previously, he was an associate with Allen & Overy LLP in Amsterdam and the International Arbitration Group of Clifford Chance LLP in Paris. He holds an LLM in international economic law, business and policy from Stanford Law School, an LLM in international law, and an LLB from the University of Amsterdam, as well as a bachelor’s degree in international relations (public international law) from the Technical University of Dresden. He spent a semester at Tecnológico de Monterrey in Mexico City, Campus Estado de México. Jan received scholarships from, among others, the German National Merit Foundation (Studienstiftung des deutschen Volkes) and the Robert Bosch Foundation. As the first foreigner and non-native speaker to ever receive that honor, he was awarded the prize for best young litigator of the Amsterdam Order of Lawyers (third of the Netherlands) in 2013. Memory Magazine named him The Netherlands’ ​“Best Young Professional Law” in 2015. 

Jan was a Robert Bosch Fellow with the public international law division of the German Federal Foreign Office in Berlin, the International Court of Justice in The Hague (Judge Simma) and a rule of law program in Nairobi, Kenya. He was a visiting fellow with the Constitution Building Team of the International Democracy Assistance Group (IDEA​.int) headquarters in Stockholm.

Jan was an intern with the Global Public Policy Institute in February and March 2006. During his internship, his main responsibility was to assist GPPi’s research work on the United Nations Learning to Build Peace project. He also supported GPPi’s evolving work on energy security and the development of a teaching case on Outsourcing to China and India.
