UN has yet to ensure full participation and protection of women in peacekeeping

Resolution 1325, which mandates UN members to engage women in all aspects of peacekeeping, has led to only minimal progress in the inclusion of women in peace operations and the protection of civilians from sexual abuse by peacekeepers, argued Garima Mohan at a workshop hosted by the Georgetown Institute for Women, Peace and Security in Washington, DC, on March 22. Indian female peacekeepers in Liberia, for example, are still held back by gender-based hierarchies and assigned roles, Mohan said.
