Cuba must be brought into international human rights regime

Human rights policy towards Cuba should shift focus from the release of political prisoners to the integration of Cuba into the international human rights regime, argued Katrin Kinzelbach in an interview with the German broadcaster hr on March 21. Commenting on President Obama’s historic visit to the island country, Kinzelbach reiterated recommendations by GPPi’s Catherine Wolf, who visited Cuba to study political prisoner releases, which are often used to further Cuba’s foreign policy agenda and do not have significant human rights impact domestically.
