Democracies must safeguard international human rights standards

Democratic governments should ensure the protection of international human rights norms from erosion, argued Katrin Kinzelbach in an interview with Deutschlandfunk on the occasion of International Human Rights Day. While democracies do not always have leverage over offending countries, they can and should continue to insist that human rights are binding standards. Kinzelbach added that diplomats should maintain regular contact with human rights activists to lend support and protection against persecution. Listen to the full program (in German).
