Emerging countries like Brazil should accept more refugees

Developing countries that want a leading role in global affairs – Brazil, for example – should accept larger numbers of refugees, stated Oliver Stuenkel in his contribution to a New York Times debate on the international response to the Syrian refugee crisis. Arguing that the crisis requires a global response, Stuenkel pointed out that Brazil could take in 50,000 refugees without causing a surge of xenophobia,” and that the influx may help to address the country’s chronic shortage of skilled workers.
