Germany’s border controls send political message of European solidarity

Germany’s introduction of temporary border controls is not only a short-term measure to create breathing space by slowing the influx of refugees, but also a broader call for European solidarity, Thorsten Benner said during an episode of Inside Story, an Al Jazeera program, that aired on September 14. The German decision, Benner said, sends a message contrary to what had seemed like an open invitation by Chancellor Angela Merkel: Germany is not open to everyone who wants to come.
