GPPi and UN experts discuss civil society initiative to “Elect the Council”

To prevent the failure of global governance and to renew the legitimacy of the United Nations, every member of the Security Council needs to be elected into the body, argues a new civil society initiative called Elect the Council. It believes there should be neither permanent members nor members with veto power. Jakkie Cilliers, executive director of the pan-African Institute for Security Studies, discussed the initiative in a roundtable discussion at GPPi on July 1. The campaign currently seeks feedback on its proposal.
