De-emotionalize the German-US relationship

Instead of charging the German-US relationship with emotion, both parties should focus on a sober consideration of joint interests that takes a global perspective, said Thorsten Benner in a discussion with Karen Donfried, president of the German Marshall Fund, on the findings of the Task Force on the Future of German-American Relations at the University of Potsdam on July 1. Benner, a member of the task force, said that German politicians should be more transparent about the country’s dependencies on the US and the need for cooperation on security matters.
