Angolan investment in Portuguese news outlets poses threat to media freedom

Ricardo Soares de Oliveira – author of the book Magnificent and Beggar Land, an account of the fast-changing dynamics of Angola – shared his expertise in an Al Jazeera video about the country’s growing investment in Portuguese news outlets. The former Portuguese colony has used its oil wealth to influence Portuguese media, which critically shapes public opinion in Angola. In the video, Soares de Oliveira noted a ​“pattern of political intrusion” designed to curtail the space for legitimate discussion on Angolan matters.
