Refocus R2P debate on avoiding abuse and finding practical tools for protection

To better protect people from atrocities, we must refocus the debate about the Responsibility to Protect (R2P) on three questions, argued Sarah Brockmeier at the Responsibility to Protect at Ten” conference at the University of Westminster on June 23. How do we ensure that protection-related military intervention is not abused for regime change? Is effective protection even possible, in light of its grim record? Can the use of force contribute to protection? Brockmeier presented the findings of an international research project about R2P led by GPPi over the past three years.
