Germany is seen as a trusted mediator in Sudan peace negotiations

While German mediation efforts in the Sudan peace negotiations remain low-key, parties to the conflict have more trust in Germany than in the UK and the US, explains Sarah Brockmeier in a TV interview with the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC). Germany’s efforts reflect the country’s desire to take on more responsibility internationally, said Brockmeier, but also serve other interests such as stemming the flow of refugees from the region. The interview was held as Thabo Mbeki, the African Union’s mediator for Sudan, met with German officials this week in Berlin.
