Three ways to open the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership to third countries

The EU and the US can ensure that the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) becomes more open to third countries in three ways, argue Fabian Bohnenberger and Clara Weinhardt in their contribution to the Heinrich Böll Foundation’s web dossier on TTIP. First, TTIP should include an accession clause for third countries. Second, the envisaged mutual recognition of product standards should be extended to third countries. Third, TTIP’s rules of origin should be as flexible as possible to allow substantial inputs from third countries. These efforts will make the multilateralization of TTIP more feasible at a later stage.
