GPPi and SAIIA step up discussions on South Africa’s responsibility to protect

On 19 September 2014 the South African Institute for International Affairs (SAIIA) in cooperation with GPPi hosted a workshop in Pretoria, South Africa. Participants debated the role of regional organizations in the protection of civilians, the relationship between the International Criminal Court and the ​“responsibility to protect” (R2P) as well as their role in the prevention of mass atrocities. The workshop is part of GPPi’s project ​“Debating the Responsibility to Protect in Brazil, China and South Africa,” which aims to facilitate more nuanced debates on the subject.
