Germany should lead the charge against Hungary's PM, argue director and president

In a commentary for Project Syndicate, Thorsten Benner and Wolfgang Reinicke argue that Germany, Hungary’s most important trading partner, should rally the European Union to pressure Hungary’s Prime Minister Viktor Orbán into acting like a democratic statesman befitting an EU member state. They propose a set of tough and credible measures to curb Orbán’s behavior. ​“The only way to stop him,” they argue, ​“is to offer him a clear choice: act like a democratic statesman or become a pariah.” The article has also been published in German, Hungarian and Albanian.
