GPPi and partners launch the 2013-2014 Global Debate and Public Policy Challenge
On 22 July 2013, GPPi along with partners announced the 2013 – 2014 Global Debate and Public Policy Challenge (GDPPC), an annual writing and debate contest that offers undergraduates across disciplines and continents an opportunity to explore issues of global importance.
The theme of the 2013 – 2014 challenge is “Rethinking Drugs.” Students are asked to explore what policies governments should adopt to address the current challenges that drugs and drug-related crime and violence pose on a social and political level. The Global Debate and Public Policy Challenge encourages students to think critically about the war on drugs and the implications of current drug policies on security, health, justice and human rights.
The challenge consists of two written tasks, which serve as qualifying stages for participation in a June 2014 forum in Budapest. The first task, a policy memo, is due 30 October 2013. Following the independent evaluation of the first task submissions, up to 200 students will then be invited to submit a policy brief. Up to 50 students will move on to the Budapest forum with the chance of winning up to five scholarships or grants worth up to $10,000.
GDPPC is jointly organized by GPPi, the International Debate Education Association, the IDEA Central Foundation, the European Council of Foreign Relations as well as the School of Public Policy at Central European University. The project is funded by the Open Society Foundations.
