GPPi launches transatlantic initiative on security and development
The Global Public Policy Institute, together InterAction
and Saferworld
, have recently launched a dialogue project that seeks to bring the expertise of European and American civil society organizations into the official EU-US Development Dialogue over policies concerning the nexus of security and development, particularly around fragile states, peace-building and state-building. Titled “Security and Development. A Transatlantic Civil Society Dialogue
”, the project runs until April 2014.
InterAction is an alliance organization in Washington, DC, of US-based international organizations. Saferworld is an independent international organization out of the UK that works to prevent violent conflict and build safer lives.
The project, which is supported through a grant from the European Union, aims to:
- Increase the visibility of European and American civil society organizations in the EU-US Development Dialogue.
- Give civil society organizations the opportunity to enter into a constructive dialogue with European and American aid institutions on good practices and recommendations for increased transatlantic cooperation around fragile states.
- Develop concrete recommendations that will be forwarded to the USAID administrator, the European Commissioner for Development and other relevant entities.
The project will feature two conferences to share experiences and develop recommendations. The first conference will take place in Berlin from 30 – 31 May 2013, while the second conference in Washington, DC, is scheduled for late 2013. In addition to organizing the two conferences and facilitating the exchange among the participants in between, the project partners will provide background research on the current status of the EU-US Development Dialogue and on selected issues defined after the first conference in Berlin.
