Netherlands Quarterly of Human Rights publishes the results of GPPi research project

GPPi researcher Katrin Kinzelbach has published an article in the September 2012 issue of the Netherlands Quarterly of Human Rights. The piece is titled Will China’s Rise Lead to a New Normative Order? Kinzelbach presents an analysis of China’s statements on human rights at the United Nations in the period 2000 – 2010. It is the output of a recently completed GPPi research project that was funded by the Thyssen Foundation.

In the article, Kinzelbach demonstrates that China’s statements on human rights are highly consistent. China primarily contests the implications of human rights rather than the norms themselves. Kinzelbach argues that even though China has so far not launched an alternative normative frame to human rights, its contestation of these norms is nonetheless serious because this contestation undermines central principles such as unconditional entitlement, international standards and country-specific monitoring.
