GPPi offers position in its global energy governance program
With the aim of expanding its global energy governance program, GPPi is seeking a part-time researcher currently pursuing or planning to pursue a PhD or post-doctoral research. This person will help shape and advance GPPi´s research and policy work in the field of global energy governance.
We seek individuals interested in working on topics at the intersection of energy, development, security and climate change (for example, the current debate on energy poverty/energy for all). The chosen candidate would join GPPi’s global energy governance research group as a part-time research associate. She or he would also have the opportunity to work with the other, established GPPi research groups that focus on, for instance, international development or rising global powers. As part of GPPi’s global energy governance research group, the selected candidate will be expected to introduce and drive new research projects, contribute to the management of existing GPPi projects and help advance the global energy governance program generally. The position is therefore suited for entrepreneurial individuals looking to develop their own cutting-edge research within the framework of a larger research endeavor. This research associate will be based in the GPPi Berlin office.
GPPi can provide a dynamic research environment and attractive platform for innovative researchers to develop their research interests and sharpen their academic and professional profile. GPPi will financially complement the funding that has or will be secured for the individual research project (for example, through an individual research scholarship). GPPi will also lend support for securing this additional funding if necessary.
Application deadline: 30 March 2012. Early applications are encouraged. Position starting date: to be determined.
What we are looking for:
- PhD candidate or post-doctoral researcher with a background in either energy and/or development
- Entrepreneurial spirit and ambition to support the further development of GPPi’s global energy governance program
- Graduate degree in political science, international relations or the social sciences (MA or equivalent)
- Outstanding analytical and writing skills (in both academic and policy-oriented work)
- Ability and willingness to publish (op-eds, journal articles, policy papers, etc.)
- Excellent English language skills
- Knowledge of German (an asset)
- A commitment of 10 hours a week
- Physical presence in Berlin desired
What we offer:
- To financially complement existing research funding (eg, a PhD scholarship, up to €800 per month)
- The chance to contribute to and drive the global energy governance program through the development of new projects, together with the support of a network of esteemed international partners, in an intellectually stimulating working environment
- A strong platform for self-driven academic and professional development in the think tank world
- A dynamic work environment in the center of Germany’s capital with an international team
- The opportunity to work independently and grow with the job
About the GPPi global energy governance program: The common dependency on energy, shared by societies around the world, entails policy challenges that transcend national borders and call for global energy governance. While the global dimension of energy challenges is unambiguous, most of the existing mechanisms and institutions of energy governance are in dire need of serious reform. GPPi’s global energy governance program analyzes the current rules of the game in global energy governance and explores ways of adapting these rules, mechanisms and institutions to the political and economic realities of the present and future.
Interested in applying? Please send your letter of motivation, an outline of your planned or ongoing research project (can be as short as two pages), your CV and two writing samples in English (previously written, published or unpublished) to Nina Perkowski (nperkowski@gppi.net). One writing sample should be more academic in nature, one more policy oriented. No paper applications and phone inquiries please.
