GPPi contributes to debate on human rights diplomacy vis-à-vis China

GPPi Fellow Katrin Kinzelbach was interviewed by Der Tagesspiegel on 2 February 2012 about Chancellor Merkel’s current trip to China and diplomatic avenues for advocating human rights reforms in the People’s Republic.

Further, on 25 January 2011, Katrin provided a briefing at the German Parliamentary Association in Berlin on the European Union’s confidential human rights dialogue with China. The discussion with parliamentarians and parliamentary staffers focused both on how 17 years of quiet diplomacy has fared and how to respond to current developments in China. The event was hosted by Ulla Burchardt, the head of the Parliamentary Committee on Education, Research and Technology, and it was sponsored by the Körber Foundation.

Earlier in January, Katrin also contributed to a public discussion on Europe, China and human rights that was held at the Körber Forum in Hamburg. The debate was aired by German public radio station Deutschlandfunk and moderated by the chief editor Stephan Detjen. The other panelists included journalist Shi Ming, sinologist Tilman Spengler and architect Meinhard von Gerkan. Video and podcast (in German) are available here.
