GPPi supports "High-Level Conference on International Police Peacekeeping in the 21st Century”
On October 10 – 11, the German federal government and the United Nations Department for Peacekeeping Operations (DPKO) are hosting a “High-Level Conference on International Police Peacekeeping in the 21st Century.”
GPPi fellow Philipp Rotmann advised the German Federal Ministry of the Interior in preparing the conference, and a GPPi team will support the organizers in their policy development and documentation efforts. The conference serves as a platform for senior policymakers from governments and international organizations as well as independent experts to discuss the challenges facing international police assistance and police in peace operations.
Confirmed keynote speakers at the conference include United Nations Under-Secretary-General Ameerah Haq, German Minister of Foreign Affairs Guido Westerwelle and German Minister of Interior Hans-Peter Friedrich. The conference is moderated by UN Police Adviser Ann-Marie Orler and Brigadier General Stefan Feller. The organizers expect more than 200 delegates and experts from more than 100 countries.
To set the stage for the conference, GPPi’s Philipp Rotmann published a brief analysis of achievements and challenges in international police peacekeeping. There will also be an official conference report to be released in late 2012.
