GPPi co-organized launch of the Global Compact network in Uganda

GPPi co-organized a conference titled Building Partnerships for Development: The Role of Companies and Foundations” on December 12 in Kampala, Uganda. The conference, hosted by the Uganda Investment Authority and the Federation of Ugandan Employers, brought together more than 100 representatives from the Ugandan business community, business associations, donors and civil society. The conference was supported by the Health Initiatives in the Private Sector” project (funded by USAID), MTN Uganda Ltd., the German Development Service (DED), and the United Nations Global Compact Office.

The objective of the conference was threefold: to discuss trends and best practices in corporate as well as foundation engagement in development; to launch the Global Compact in Uganda; and to identify opportunities for public-private partnerships with official donors active in Uganda. The conference was organized in three sessions. In the first session, GPPi presented the results of a study on the role of private aid in Uganda. During the second session, the Global Compact was presented. The final session consisted of a number of presentations by donor organizations on their partnership programs for the private sector. The event ignited significant excitement about the UN Global Compact, and key stakeholders have agreed to join hands in 2009 to further promote the initiative in Uganda.
