GPPi contributes to workshop on monitoring and evaluation

GPPi Associate Director Julia Steets delivered a speech on the issue of monitoring and evaluation at an event entitled Impact of Monitoring and Evaluation Efforts on Design, Implementation and Resource Allocation” which took place in Berlin on 2 – 3 December 2008. Organizers of the event were the International Finance Corporation (IFC), the German Marshall Fund of the United States (GMF), and the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Technische Zusammenarbeit (GTZ).

During her speech Steets highlighted some of the challenges facing traditional donors in development and the role of private actors in development – particularly foundations – and their promises in terms of new approaches to development and the risks they pose to donor coordination and harmonization. Steets put forth a few points for an agenda for mutual learning events involving public and private development actors in the area of monitoring and evaluation. Suggestions were also made regarding monitoring and evaluation tools, technical approaches, cases to evaluate (at what level and when), and how to translate evaluation results in learning towards organizational change.
