GPPi's work on post-conflict reconstruction featured on Deutsche Welle
On November 1, Andrea Binder, a Research Associate at GPPi, was featured on Deutsche Welle’s “World in Progress” program, which focuses on development topics and related issues. The topic of the program was post-conflict reconstruction and the changing nature of global aid relief. Binder commented on the role of NGOs and government in Sri Lanka following the 2004 tsunami, stating that often times the large number of NGOs responding to disasters lack coordination and undermine efforts of the local government to respond effectively to the crisis at hand. In addition, she emphasized the positive role that market and democracy forces can play in developing and post-disaster regions, however she stressed that the approach taken by western governments and NGOs often does not take into account local variables.
