GPPi mourns death of Richard Sandbrook
The Global Public Policy Institute mourns the death of Richard Sandbrook, a friend and collaborator, who died on December 10. Richard Sandbrook, aged 59, was one of the most passionate and influential advocates of sustainable development. A founder of the British arm of Friends of the Earth in the 1970s, Richard Sandbrook became executive director of the International Institute for Environment and Development (IIED) in 1989, a post he held for ten years. Governments, NGOs and individuals such as the Prince of Wales all sought his advice frequently. From 2000 – 2002, Richard Sandbrook was one of the main drivers behind the Metals, Mining and Sustainable Development (MMSD) Project, a two-year multi-stakeholder process of consultation and research with the objective of understanding how to maximize the contribution of the mining and minerals sector to sustainable development at the global, national, regional and local levels. The Global Public Policy Institute is currently convening a review of the MMSD Project during which it has closely colloborated with Richard Sandbrook.
