Dilma Rousseff’s success in Brazil’s presidential elections was no surprise. Lula, the most popular president in Brazil’s history, carefully prepared his formerly unknown chief of staff, successfully turning the election into a referendum on his time in office. Since Brazil experienced historic growth rates during Lula’s years in office, Dilma merely needed to promise continuity to be elected the country’s first female president. Yet what does her presidency mean for the South American giant, which will soon be the fifth largest economy on earth, and how should European countries like Germany react strategically?
