Stephan Mergenthaler

Stephan Mergenthaler is associate director for Strategic Foresight with the World Economic Forum in Geneva. His research interests include rising powers, global security governance, EU foreign policy, and EU-China relations.
Before GPPi, where he originally joined as a research associate, Stephan worked with the International Institute for Strategies Studies in London. He also gained experience with the American Enterprise Institute and the US Senate Democratic Steering Committee in Washington DC, the South Asia Human Rights Documentation Center in New Delhi, the German and French Ministries of Foreign Affairs in Berlin and Paris, as well as the German Mission to the United Nations in New York. His commentary has appeared in the International Herald Tribune, ZEIT online, Spiegel online, and EU Observer, among others. His publications include The New World of UN Peace Operations: Learning to Build Peace? (Oxford University Press 2011).
Stephan holds a Master of Science in International Relations from the London School of Economics as well as a Master of Arts in International Affairs and Security Studies from the Institut d’Etudes Politiques de Paris (Sciences Po). He was a visiting fellow at George Washington University’s Elliot School of International Affairs in Washington DC and graduated from Sciences Po’s Franco-German undergraduate program. He obtained scholarships from the Foundation of German Business (Stiftung der Deutschen Wirtschaft) and the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD).
