GPPi Seeks a Communications Assistant/Associate

The Global Public Policy Institute (GPPi), an independent, non-profit think tank, seeks a full-time communications assistant or associate to join us in Berlin.

As part of our small communications team, this new colleague will support us in our efforts to spread the word about our research findings, policy advice and ideas to different audiences (such as politicians, policy- and decision-makers in public sector institutions, other researchers and experts, journalists, and the wider public – in Germany, Europe and around the world).

The core of the position is to help manage and develop GPPi’s publications, social media channels, our newsletter, the main website, and different microsites. A big part of this will be writing tailored copy for those channels (in English), editing and proofreading various publications, such as studies, reports, shorter op-eds, and other written outputs, keeping our web presence up to date, and supporting us in experimenting with new formats to better communicate our work.

The position will be based at GPPi’s Berlin office. While flexible working hours and periods of remote work are possible, we expect the successful candidate to be based in and primarily work from Berlin.

This role might be for you if:

  • You are a creative self-starter with what others may have called extreme attention to detail, a knack for writing crisp and accessible copy, and the tech-savviness to adopt and use a range of web-based tools (including our current CMS);
  • You consider yourself a bit of a language nerd (read: you’re a stickler for accurate punctuation and appreciate style guides) and often find yourself mulling over questions of spelling, grammar and style;
  • You have a talent for hitting the right tone and squeezing complicated ideas into pithy sentences – and you enjoy doing so;
  • You are structured, have no trouble organizing yourself (and others, including via shared project management tools) and keep your cool even when asked to juggle multiple tasks;
  • You value collaboration and thrive in small teams and fast-paced work environments;
  • You are interested in all things international affairs and public policy and enjoy communicating about a variety of topics, from Europe-China relations to migration policy to AI regulation.

Required and Desired Qualifications

The successful candidate will have:

  • Outstanding writing skills in English (being a native or near-native English speaker will be considered a plus);
  • Sound editorial judgment and strong attention to detail;
  • Initial experience in running and developing social media channels;
  • Demonstrated experience in website management, including in learning and handling common content management systems;
  • Creativity and a good eye for what is on brand;
  • Good organizational and time management skills;
  • An interest in project management and a desire to grow into an independent project management role;
  • Curiosity about and proven familiarity with GPPi’s main issue areas and fields of work;
  • A strong academic background (completed BA degree) in a relevant field such as – but not limited to – journalism, communication, PR, marketing, public policy, political science, or international relations.

Further assets are:

  • A good command of languages other than English, particularly German (additional languages are always a plus);
  • Any other relevant skills, such as prior experience working with graphic design, audio and/or video editing software, knowledge of web analytics tools, etc.

In addition to laying out what we are looking for, the points above are meant to give you a better sense of what to expect from the role. Even if you cannot tick every box, we would still encourage you to apply. Similarly, if you have work or volunteer experience in other, even unrelated fields, feel free to explain how what you have learned is relevant to this position. We believe that many professional skills are transferable.

Starting date: As soon as possible and no later than November 1, 2024.
